MMA Pakistan expands into MMA gear

Here in Pakistan, despite not having a huge MMA scene, we ironically probably have access to more quality MMA equipment per capita than anywhere else in the world. Sialkot located in Eastern Punjab is one of the worlds largest MMA gear manufacturing hubs on earth. The problem is, is that there is a large disconnect between manufacturers and buyers. Much of this is due to language and cultural differences but the vast majority of it is due to the fact that manufacturers ARE NOT MMA athletes and cannot understand the rigors that gear is suspect to during MMA training. That is why MMA Pakistan is now working with various Sialkot manufacturers as a liaison between foreign companies. MMA Pakistan can provide the certification and quality inspection that is needed to do honest long term business relations with manufacturers. On top of that MMA Pakistan can subject sample gear to testing under combat conditions to ensure top quality gear is being manufactured. For those who wish to do business in Pakistan producing MMA equipment than it is highly advised to go through MMA Pakistan as a channel to ensure success.

MMA Pakistan is committed to the sport of MMA and is proud to know that Pakistan is a leading global producer in MMA gear. We hold high standards for ourselves and expect the same from the manufacturers that we do dealings with.

More information regarding this to be detailed soon!

Children’s Martial Arts Summer Camps

Now is the time that parents and students themselves decide to enroll their children or themselves into a healthy activity that will keep them busy and possibly enrich them with some new skills or knowledge. For this reason Summer Camps have become popular amongst those who can afford them as an enlightened and modern way to have your children spend the summer as opposed to getting fat and lazy at home watching TV.

The summer camp will cover the basic of Mixed Martial Arts, to include, boxing, wrestling, kick boxing and jiu jitsu. Observations from Abu Dhabi

It’s been exciting coming out to Abu Dhabi to watch UFC 112. The city is not very big and you can spot guys with their MMA team shirts or Tapout shirts in the hotels and malls.

I flew here from Lahore on Friday and after checking into my hotel, I headed straight for Marina Mall to catch the UFC 112 weigh-in’s.

Throughout the mall there were banners and the television screens advertising the fight. In the middle of the mall they had set up a stage on one side and a signing booth on the other so that GSP and Ross Pearson could sign autographs for the fans.

The weigh in area was PACKED. The majority of the fans were caucasian people from all over, mostly UK and USA but many from Europe as well. They probably made up about 40% of the crowd the rest of the crowd was a mix, with a lot of Arabs (of course, it’s the UAE) and Filipinos and then a random collection of people from the 196 countries that can be found in Abu Dhabi which happens to be 80% expatriate.

They played the countdown to UFC 112 on a giant screen above the weigh in stage and after spending 30 minutes watching that, I heard commotion from the opposite end of the staging area and saw GSP and Ross Pearson walking in to sit down for the signings. Immediately, people seemed to forget the concept of a line although it was not as bad as Pakistan. If this had been Pakistan I am sure the weigh in would have been canceled after people got out of control. But luckily it didn’t get too bad, just a lot of complaining from people about shoving. I got pictures of both Ross Pearson and GSP signed and quickly had the MMA Pakistan shirt I was wearing signed by GSP as well.

I then got out of the mayhem of the signing area and went upstairs to catch the weigh ins from the railing above (this was a mall).

The weigh in’s were very cool, fighters do not look as big as you would think they are in person. At least that was my impression.

After the weigh in’s there was a Q&A with GSP, during which about 7 fans asked the same question “will you go up in weight to fight Anderson Silva?”

At the same time in the back Dana White as well as other UFC and MMA personas like Bruce Buffer, Phil Nurse, Tiki, Eddie Bravo and Dana White were hanging out talking to fans.

Despite all the crap Dana White gets from people, I do have to say the man is very polite and personable with the fans and I did not hear him curse once :) .

After about 3 hours of standing in the same area I decided to go eat in the food court and leave. While in the food court it seems that although fighters seem to keep a disciplined diet the rest of their entourage certainly DO NOT. Lot’s of ice cream and sodas to be seen. I won’t name names :)

Over all, great experience and I look forward to tonight.

The problem with Martial Arts in Pakistan

As MMA is growing in popularity all over the world it is also picking up here in Pakistan. More and more people have started watching UFC fights and now want to train to be able to fight like that. Academies and federations are being formed in order to further this sport. However there are some problems which are holding MMA and martial arts back in Pakistan. There is too much politics and many people are just getting into MMA for their own motives.
The main problem is that everyone is trying to get the power themselves. Instead of having a united front or federation which would cover all the fighters and further the cause of MMA in Pakistan everyone is instead opting to create their own federation. This is a big problem because MMA is not very popular in Pakistan yet. However if there was one big federation it will have enough power to actually matter and hold MMA events that would attract fighters and the audience. But due to their being many small organizations none of these have any power and are unable to do anything which matters.
Another problem is the people who are taking advantage of the rise of martial arts in Pakistan. These people know that since this field is becoming more relevant there are going to be more events. These people waste the government money by going on international tours. All they are good for is for having their pictures taken with officials from other countries. Their motive is not to increase the exposure of MMA in Pakistan but to just get to fly around the world and be guests at the expense of martial arts. People need to stop relying on government handouts and instead do something for themselves. This is not a problem; MMA is a very profitable sport and can attract large audiences. It does not require any help from the government. It just needs some serious fighters and good marketing to gain a foothold in Pakistan.
There are also some people who claim to know about MMA because they have certifications from many places. MMA is not about certifications, it is about knowing how to defend oneself and how to fight properly. These people never get into a ring and prove their skills; they just claim to know things due to their certifications. Infact there are even some people who claim to have PHDs in martial arts. Which university did they get the PHD from? People need to wise up. We cannot trust such people who claim to have lots of certifications. People need to ask questions. Ask your instructor about how much they know and where they learnt to fight MMA style. You should not be afraid to ask questions, if you are training under someone you need to make sure that they themselves know what they are supposed to teach you. See how the instructors fight and make sure they have some experience in order to avoid getting burned by a scammer or an inexperienced teacher.

If you are interested in learning MMA and want to at least want to know that your instructor is knowledgeable about MMA, we suggest you do some research before hand and test your instructor and see if he knows what he is talking about. We have attached some links here for you to check out and get some knowledge.

Things to consider when looking for a Martial Arts Academy in Pakistan

If the recent rise of MMA (mixed martial arts) sports such as UFC has made you interested in learning martial arts then you should join a martial arts academy in Pakistan. However keep in mind that there are some things which you should consider before joining a martial arts academy. There are many academies which claim to give you proper training even though they do not have the required equipment.
The thing is that the usual mentality of just making things work without having proper facilities does not apply to the world of MMA. The reason is that in order to learn proper martial arts you will have to learn how to fall and how to manage yourself properly in a MMA match. This is similar to playing cricket in a street versus playing in a stadium. No matter how good you become playing in a street you cannot become professional because you will not be used to the way the game is played in a stadium. Just like this in MMA it is also important to play on mats and inside a ring.
It is important to play on mats because you need to learn what to do if you fall. Anyone who has seen an MMA match knows that many strategies involve grabbing your opponent and knocking them down to the floor. But if the academy has no mats then the players will get hurt when they fall. This will make them afraid of falling and thus they will not be able to train themselves properly for a scenario where they may fall down or have to knock down an opponent. When you are training on a mat you do not worry about getting hurt and this makes you fight freely.
Playing in a ring is also very important. But some of the institutes which claim to be the top academy for martial arts do not have this facility. The reason it is important to train on a ring is that this will make you used to the perimeter and borders of the fight. The ropes also stop you from running away from a fight and help you in learning to properly defend yourself. Currently Shaheen Academy is the only institute in Pakistan which has a ring for martial arts.
Before taking admission in a place remember to inquire about all these things and any other question you may have in your mind. Remember that you should not be afraid or ashamed to ask questions. Not only are you going to pay them you will also spend your time there. If the place lacks the proper equipment then not only will your money be wasted but all the time and efforts you spend there will also be wasted. If you want to be a good martial artist then you need to learn in a proper place which takes MMA seriously. Make sure the instructor knows what they are doing and can make you a good MMA fighter.

Pakistan Bans Lahore the movie

The Pakistani censor board has banned Lahore the movie from being screened in Pakistan. The board had objection with some scenes in the movie. Both the director and producer are surprised by this decision and have claimed that there is nothing in the movie against Pakistan. The movie is based on the world of MMA and its story is about a match between an Indian and a Pakistani fighter. The climax of the movie is set in Lahore.

The movie was set to be releases in Pakistan. Rashid Khawaja, a Pakistani producer, had shown keen interest in buying the rights to screen the film in Pakistan. However due to the decision of the censor board this will not be possible. The board has objected because according to it some of the scenes in the movie portrayed Pakistan in a negative light.
Sanjay Puran Chauhan , the director of the movie has claimed that the movie was not a typical bollywood fare and did not bash Pakistan. Talking in an interview he said ‘Lahore’ is not a typical Bollywood commercial film. It’s not a Pakistan bashing film. It is a very different and balanced project with no negativity or biases against any country. We were very keen that it releases there (in Pakistan), but now we are disappointed’

Some of the scenes of the movie were even shot in Lahore itself. The director wanted to shoot more but he was not given a visa for Pakistan. On this he said ‘We were kept on hold for a long time and they kept delaying the process. We got foreign crew, mostly from the Netherlands, and then we had to employ local crew. We could only take exterior shots as we were told by locals that shooting with Indian actors could create hassles,’

He has claimed that he is surprised on the decision of the censor board as he has tried to keep the tone of the film neutral. ‘We were told that the authorities aren’t pleased with certain portions of the movie. But every film has certain tones without which it will lose its essence.’

The movie has been played out and critically acclaimed in many different film festivals. It is going to be released worldwide on the coming Friday.

The ban on this movie is furtive. Indian movies had been banned for about four decades in Pakistan but this had no effect on their popularity. Just like all movies Lahore will also somehow find its way into the screens of Pakistani movie watchers. The movie might have had some negative portrayals about Pakistan. Since it is an Indian movie it was pretty much a given that the Indian fighter will be shown winning in the end. However we cannot know if the ban by the board was justified until we see the movie ourselves. This controversy is only going to help the movie as now more people will be interested in watching it than before because people will want to know the reason it was banned…
