ONE FC: Battle Of Heroes

Posted on: February 14th, 2012 by admin No Comments

February 11th,2012 marked the second event  by ONE FC, “Battle of Heroes”, promotion for the event was on par as usual as the promotion had some big names fighting on the card such as Pride and K-1 veteran Bob “The Beast” Sapp, BJJ Black belt and 2007 Abu Dhabi Silver medalist Rolles Gracie, Ole Laursen, Russian prospect Rustam Khabilov and many more. The event was held at The BritAma Arena, Jakarta, Indonesia and was attended by over 4000 spectators. Although this time the main card was PPV only, the guys over at ONE FC were generous enough to stream a live broadcast of the preliminary fights on their facebook page and on their Ustream channel.

After watching the first event, ONE FC made it clear that they would not compromise on the talent and the quality of the fighters and they did not disappoint, the prelim was stacked with great fights and the event proved it, in fact in my opinion the prelims had slightly better fights than the main card due to the number of finishes and the exciting style of fights that took place.

From the first preliminary to the last, every fight was exciting and had me on the edge of my seat, be it Peter Davis’ come from behind triangle choke, Irshaad Sayed’s body shot that dropped and finished his opponent in less than 2 minutes or the classic striker vs grappler match between Alex Silva and Geje Eustaquio.

On to the main card, which kicked off with the highly anticipated Super Heavyweight bout between Bob Sapp and Rolles Gracie, the fight ended quickly with Gracie taking down Sapp and forcing him to tap to punches being thrown from the mount.

The second fight was between Gustavo Falciroli and Soo Chul Kim which ironically saw Kim trying to take the BJJ Black belt to the ground which only ended up in him giving up his back which was expertly taken by Falciroli and then being submitted by a Rear Naked Choke by the jiujitsu expert early in the first round.

Next was Rodrigo Ribeiro vs. Rustam Khabilov, this fight was very technical, showcasing the grappling skills of both the fighters as Ribeiro mostly worked the guard trying to get a submission whereas Khabilov displayed excellent submission defence and stayed out of trouble, in the end getting the nod from the judges towards a unanimous decision victory.

Next up was a featherweight match between Bae Young Kwon vs. Honorio Banario, the fighters spent the first minute feeling each other out which suddenly changed when Kwon threw a long range jab and followed by a 1-2 combo, slipped, got a body lock, took the back and finished the fight with a rear naked choke, Kwon demonstrated slick movement and excellent grappling skills that gave him the win.

The main event featured two well known fighters who have fought all over the world, Ole Laursen and Felipe Enemoto , the first round was a back and forth battle, which saw Ole swinging for the fences throwing every shot with bad intentions whereas Felipe kept his composure and stayed technical, both fighters were exchanging punches with Laursen throwing the heavier shots once knocking down Felipe mid in the first round, later in the round we got to see the grappling skills of both fighters when Felipe attempted a guillotine which was very deep and I almost felt that he would have gotten the submission, but Ole proved me wrong as he not just escaped but ended up taking Felipe’s back and tried to sink in a rear naked choke but the Swiss demonstrated his own skill set of submission defence and kept Ole busy which then saw the end of the round. In the second round we saw a much more calm and composed Ole who stayed technical and kept the fight standing, even though Felipe was getting the better of the boxing exchange due to his superior reach advantage, Laursen kept attacking the legs which were going unchecked and was doing heavy damage, with 2 minutes left in the fight Felipe threw a combination which ended with a head kick that connected with Ole’s head, dropping and dazing him, Felipe seized the opportunity and swarmed on Laursen not giving him an inch throwing heavy hands which made Ole give up his back and without wasting a second Felipe sinked in a choke which saw the end of the fight and the event.

All in all ONE FC did not fail to deliver quality fights which were very exciting and show cased the level of talent that Asia has in terms of MMA. Next up is ONE FC 3 on the 31st of March, which I am personally very excited about, as it features the return of MMA and UFC veteran, former Strikeforce Light heavyweight Champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral who is my favorite fighter and he goes up against Dutch Muay Thai wrecking machine Melvin Manhoef who has fought in big organizations like Strikeforce, Dream, K-1 and much more.

Shaheen Smoker F.A.Q

Posted on: October 9th, 2011 by admin 3 Comments

What is a ”smoker” event?

When you’re training in MMA you eventually want to test your skills. Often fighters enter amateur events to get a better understanding of where they stand. But what if you’re not ready for an amateur event, and you have already sparred with everyone in your gym. Then what you want is a “Smoker” – an event in which different schools and gyms pair up and have their students test themselves. This is the perfect solution to test your skills and see what competition is out there.

What are ”Shaheen Smokers”?

Shaheen smokers serve the same purpose, they are designed to introduce new fighters to a professional environment without the pressure and hype of one. Inviting players from other gyms, schools or clubs to test their skills in not just MMA but almost all form of combat sports, be it boxing, submission grappling, muay thai/kick boxing. Shaheen smokers have even introduced mixed rules, catered to the specific needs of different fighters which include but are not limited to, MMA rules with the exception of strikes on the ground, Kickboxing with standing submissions etc.

The first Shaheen Smoker took place on April 17th 2010 at Shaheen MMA Academy, the event saw fighters from different styles of martial arts competing against each other in a ring with a small number of spectators. The event gives fighters the experience and confidence necessary to participate in professional events without the possibility of  performance anxiety.

Who can participate in a Shaheen Smoker event?

Shaheen smokers are not just  for poeple who train in MMA or martial arts, they are for anybody and by anybody, it means literally anyone. Are you a street fighter who likes to brawl in clubs?,do you watch the WWE and think you can take on other guys?, are you a body builder and think no one can beat you?,then come on down to a Shaheen Smoker and test out your skills in a safe and professional environment where at the end of the day its all about the fighters and the audience having a  good time. In order to make sure you get a fight just pre-register yourself after the date of  the event is announced on facebook, twitter and on www.pak-mma.com

Where do Shaheen Smokers take place?

Shaheen Smokers originally took place at Shaheen MMA Academy and Elite Fitness but with Shaheen MMA Academy merging with Synergy Fitness, the smokers now take place at Synergy Fitness, which is just 1KM from the Shaheen Academy location. For complete address and contact information visit www.club-synergy.com .

What happens on the day of the Shaheen Smoker?

A typical Shaheen Smoker day starts of with the participants(fighters) getting weighed so as to ensure complete fairness if the fight has been agreed to happen in a particular weight category. Match ups are announced and the rules of the fights are explained depending upon the proposed match ups by the fighters, after which the fights take place.

Can I get injured if I fight in the Shaheen Smoker?

As this is a combat sport, minor injuries like cuts and bruises occurring in a fight are common, although strict measures are taken to ensure fighter safety from any long term and life threatening injuries by the organizers.

Can I come just to watch the fights?

Yes you can, the aim of MMA Pakistan is to promote the sport of MMA throughout each corner of Pakistan, your presence will resemble the success we have made so far, to show your support also bring your friends and everyone who is interested in MMA.

Which is the best place to train if I want to train for a Smoker?

Depending where you are situated, for Lahore, the best place to train for a smoker or any MMA event is Synergy Fitness.

I have some more questions, who do I contact?

For further information please call 0334-4137706.

First MMA Cage EVER in Pakistan starting construction

Posted on: May 9th, 2011 by admin 2 Comments

Now we know that in our country everyone likes to add “First Time in Pakistan!” Chances are you might even see this nonsense on a board for shop selling Daal Chavel. Most of the time it’s just some sort of gimmick. As the sport grows your bound to see fake masters and others jumping on the MMA bandwagon and claiming to be first time in Pakistan. So we really don’t like saying it, we like to show it and I think our track record says as much.

Well for the hell of it…FIRST TIME IN PAKISTAN…PAKMMA under sponsorship from PAK FIGHT CLUB is manufacturing the country’s first MMA cage. This is to be a proper 30 foot cage, the same dimensions as used in the UFC and is to be in the octagon shape.

The picture you see on the homepage for this article and other pictures which you can see here on our facebook page.

Right now what is going is that the steel workers are drawing a diagram in the dirt (only in Pakistan!) upon which they got PAKMMA’s feedback and which they will then use to begin construction of the cage.

This is for real guys! We’ll keep you updated with pictures as they come. And if anyone is interested in having a cage constructed for export. Please contact us at info@pak-mma.com or leave a post on our wall. Rates are much more reasonable than if you were to buy anywhere else with the added knowledge that THE MMA HQ of Pakistan is in charge of manufacturing and will be supervising each and every project as we currently are for PAK FIGHT CLUB.

Shah “No Pain” Hussain to be fighting September 11th in the UK

Posted on: September 3rd, 2010 by admin No Comments

MMA Pakistan recently caught up with PAK MMA fighter Shah “No Pain” Hussain while training for his upcoming match up in England on the 11th of September. Although Shah was very busy he did have time to give us a few answers to our questions.

1. Your fight is going to be during Ramadan. How has that effected your training?

a) Yes my fight is not just going to be in ramadhan, but in the UK may fall on Eid day itself!! I kind of misjudged the timing of Ramadhan this year round and normally refrain from any kind of competition around this time of the year. But with the fight being on Sept 11th I have had to observe ramadhan on a part time basis. So training hasnt really been affected at all really.

2. Do you know who your opponent is? Anything you can tell us about him?

a) Yes my opponent is a guy called Ben Abbot who is fighting out of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. I believe he has a stand up background in Muay Thai, thats all I know to be honest.

3. Have you made any changes to your training regimen for this upcoming bout?

a) I have seriously been working on my ground game, my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu both with Gi and without. Ive been training my no Gi BJJ with Przemyslaw Mysiala who is no1 ranked Light Heavy Weight in the UK at the moment at London Shootfighters and Im really enjoying the grappling element of MMA at the moment. Im even considering competing in some BJJ bouts in the near future!
Other than that Ive still been keeping up with my strength and conditioning, cardio and sparring with my team mates Denniston ‘mad max’ Sutherland and my coach David Lee. As its MMA and everything has to be worked on Im afraid!!

4. You will be donating 100% of your fight purse to the Pakistani flood victims, what motivated you to make such a sacrifice?

a) I decided to donate all my fight purse, ticket commission, sponsership money etc to the flood victims of Pakistan as firstly being Pakistani I felt a need to naturally do something, and it just broke my heart seeing pictures and videos on the News every day of the devastation caused by the monsoon, the death toll and on top of that it is the month of Ramadhan and for people going through all the suffering. Its just horrible to think that the world isnt doing enough for these people in desperate need at this moment in time. My prayers and thoughts go to all those affected and involved. God is great and I hope he shows mercy upon those affected. On Sept 11th I shall be fighting for all those victims.

5. Will Pakistani fans be able to watch the fight anyway?

Yes Pakistani fans will be able to watch the fight on www.theactivechannel.com under the fighting section it will be broadcasted usually a couple of weeks after the show on Sky digital channel 281 (The active channel) formerly known as LA Muscle TV

I am also fighting on the 25th of September on a big show called BAMMA 4 which will highlight Alex Reid Vs Tom Watson.
Im fighting on the undercard slot and against a guy called Tom Breese who is making his Pro debut after a successful 8-0-0 at semi pro, so hard work will continue after Kayo MMA on the 11th, no rest for me!!

BAMMA 4 will be shown a week after the show on Bravo channel on sky digital and hopefully they may show the fight.

Other than that, I’ll probably do a training camp out in the USA or in Thailand end of year / early next year and to just keep training and improving.

I also want to give my congratulations to PAK MMA and Shaheen MMA Academy for getting a good spread in last months Fighters Only magazine (I have my copy) and was so pleased to see the article on the rise of MMA in Pakistan and with the mention of future stars. This definately has made an impression on people over here in the UK as a few people had mentioned it to me and were surprised that MMA was actually taking off in Pakistan.

MMA in Pakistan may be a new entity, but I dont think, I KNOW that a Pakistani will be up there and amongst the very best in the world in the future. Just keep training folks and spread the word….

Why I Fight – Haider “Robocop” Qayyum

Posted on: July 6th, 2010 by admin 7 Comments

Most people take things slow in the fight-game. They train for a year or so, then have some
amateur fights, maybe change gyms and then maybe…in the rare instance that they can break
the ,monotony and social stigmas around them, they go professional.

I dove head-first into professional combat sports. Training for a few months before my Thai
Boxing debut in Phuket,Thailand and that lack of experience and know-how showing in the ring.
I fought an Australian , Taizo Hughes, who had several fights at local stadiums and was from
a pretty hardcore gym. Taizo battered me for the first three rounds of our fight. Leg kicks, head
kicks, hooks…its was a massacre. Both of my eyes were swollen shut and my nose trickling
blood down my throat, which I have to say wasn’t the most pleasant of tastes. The fourth round
begins and I notice Taizo is starting to tire and I…being the naïve seventeen year old I was at
the time decided to throw a spinning back-fist.

Guess what? It landed.

Taizo was knocked down and got up after an eight count but I knew the fight was over as
I chased him to a corner and the referee stopped the bout due to “Technical Knock Out “.
Why was that story necessary? Because at the end of those three rounds of getting my
ass beat, I was happier than I’d ever been. Standing half-naked and sweaty infront of
a crowd of people I’d never met, all of them judging my poor technique and wondering
why I hadn’t gone down yet. Covered in blood and sweat…I had finally found my calling.
So why do I fight ? Is it because I have family problems or because I was bullied in school? Is it
because I’m too stupid to get a desk job or go to college?

I don’t know to be quite honest. I think its because there’s something inherently wrong with
the way I function. My brain works differently. I like getting punched in the fucking face
and I like smiling at the guy who’s doing it. I like pushing myself in training to the brink of
unconsciousness and then doing it again the next day.

Lots of people I know who are involved with combat sports from boxing to Mixed Martial
Arts insist on calling themselves Martial Artists or “students of the game” . As pretentious
and crazy as it sounds… I am not a martial artist or a student of any game. I’m a crazy
person who learns how to hit people different ways and then goes does it and gets paid.
Why do I like to make my living from getting punched in the face?

I’ll tell you why. Because everyone said I couldn’t do it. They said I was crazy and that one day
I’d have to get a real job. I think I don’t fight for the right reasons, or ones that entirely make
sense but I do know that nothing has ever made me happier than staring across the ring at
someone, blood smeared face and smiling. Letting them know that you’re coming and not done
getting your face beat just yet.

While this was supposed to be an informative article for Mixed Martial Arts Pakistan , I think its
turned into a confessional.

My name is Haider Qayyum, I’m a professional fighter and I like punching things.

New Coloumn by “Humble Ninja”

Posted on: February 12th, 2010 by admin 8 Comments

Mixed Martial Arts Pakistan is very pleased to add another writer to it’s team! We will be having a recurring column “The Humble Ninja”, regarding not only Martial Arts techniques but Martial Philosophy. We here at Mixed Martial Arts Pakistan do not in any way want MMA to become a subculture of violence within Pakistan that one can arguably say it is becoming in some countries. We want MMA to not stray from the Martial Arts Philosophy that espouses a peaceful and non confrontational attitude in your daily life.

Mixed Martial Arts Pakistan also wants Martial Arts training to be able to be available to everyone. Not only those who can pay and so it is great that this new column takes that into consideration as well for the reader. Hope you enjoy!

Following article taken from http://martialartseasy.blogspot.com/

Our mission is to teach the people who can not afford Self Defense or have no schools to learn about Protecting Arts. Our mission is to make our students more successful in life through their practice of Martial arts. We do this by teaching martial arts as a complete discipline (mind, body and spirit) which in addition to developing physical defense encourages the formation of high personal standards and respect for fellow men and women. Through our practice and teaching , we strive to produce individuals who are positive, respected and contributing members of society. Martial arts training improves physical ability, health and willpower, it gives an individual an excellent method of exercise and a competitive sports. Martial arts is not just a sport its a complete way of life.

We will be teaching from very basic so you don’t have to worry about if you have a martial arts back ground or not!

What will you learn here?
Ans) We will be teaching you :

* Warm-up and conditioning exercises
* How to make a fist, stance, punching, blocking, kicks
* Punching and blocking combination
* Kicking, punching and blocking combination
* Elbow and knee strikes
* Self-defense (Male/Female)
* Traditional Weapons
* Anger management
* Non-violent conflict resolution

This is very important before you start training ! so i request all of you to read it completely and try to understand!

The first question that arise in one’s mind is:

Q)What are Martial Arts?
Ans) The term martial arts refers to all of the various systems of training for combat that have been arranged or systematized.

Q) Philosophy of Martial arts?
Ans) The martial arts are both art and science. The word “art” is defined as the activity of creating beautiful things and the word “science” is defined as a methodological activity, discipline, or study”. While these two definitions are correct, I prefer the contributions of an anonymous poet: “Art is a passions pursued with discipline science is a discipline pursued with passion”. At their most basic level, the martial arts are nothing more than ways to prevent someone from harming or killing you. At their highest aspiration, the martial arts are paths to self-knowledge and the expression of beauty.

The martial artist must be both scientist and artist. He must learn the traditions, theories, principles, laws and techniques upon which martial artistry is based. He must then practice them with passion and discipline so as to properly learn and understand what he is doing. Only then can he master himself and the martial arts.

Q) Aim of a martial artist?
Ans)There are three aspects of being, which the martial arts aim to develop: Body, Mind and Spirit. These three aspects must be developed in balance for a person to become properly balanced as a martial artist and therefore as a person.

We will discuss these three aspect in detail !

I request all of you to post your feed back and share this blog with other.

Regards
Humble Ninja!
