Shaheen Smoker F.A.Q

Posted on: October 9th, 2011 by admin 3 Comments

What is a ”smoker” event?

When you’re training in MMA you eventually want to test your skills. Often fighters enter amateur events to get a better understanding of where they stand. But what if you’re not ready for an amateur event, and you have already sparred with everyone in your gym. Then what you want is a “Smoker” – an event in which different schools and gyms pair up and have their students test themselves. This is the perfect solution to test your skills and see what competition is out there.

What are ”Shaheen Smokers”?

Shaheen smokers serve the same purpose, they are designed to introduce new fighters to a professional environment without the pressure and hype of one. Inviting players from other gyms, schools or clubs to test their skills in not just MMA but almost all form of combat sports, be it boxing, submission grappling, muay thai/kick boxing. Shaheen smokers have even introduced mixed rules, catered to the specific needs of different fighters which include but are not limited to, MMA rules with the exception of strikes on the ground, Kickboxing with standing submissions etc.

The first Shaheen Smoker took place on April 17th 2010 at Shaheen MMA Academy, the event saw fighters from different styles of martial arts competing against each other in a ring with a small number of spectators. The event gives fighters the experience and confidence necessary to participate in professional events without the possibility of  performance anxiety.

Who can participate in a Shaheen Smoker event?

Shaheen smokers are not just  for poeple who train in MMA or martial arts, they are for anybody and by anybody, it means literally anyone. Are you a street fighter who likes to brawl in clubs?,do you watch the WWE and think you can take on other guys?, are you a body builder and think no one can beat you?,then come on down to a Shaheen Smoker and test out your skills in a safe and professional environment where at the end of the day its all about the fighters and the audience having a  good time. In order to make sure you get a fight just pre-register yourself after the date of  the event is announced on facebook, twitter and on www.pak-mma.com

Where do Shaheen Smokers take place?

Shaheen Smokers originally took place at Shaheen MMA Academy and Elite Fitness but with Shaheen MMA Academy merging with Synergy Fitness, the smokers now take place at Synergy Fitness, which is just 1KM from the Shaheen Academy location. For complete address and contact information visit www.club-synergy.com .

What happens on the day of the Shaheen Smoker?

A typical Shaheen Smoker day starts of with the participants(fighters) getting weighed so as to ensure complete fairness if the fight has been agreed to happen in a particular weight category. Match ups are announced and the rules of the fights are explained depending upon the proposed match ups by the fighters, after which the fights take place.

Can I get injured if I fight in the Shaheen Smoker?

As this is a combat sport, minor injuries like cuts and bruises occurring in a fight are common, although strict measures are taken to ensure fighter safety from any long term and life threatening injuries by the organizers.

Can I come just to watch the fights?

Yes you can, the aim of MMA Pakistan is to promote the sport of MMA throughout each corner of Pakistan, your presence will resemble the success we have made so far, to show your support also bring your friends and everyone who is interested in MMA.

Which is the best place to train if I want to train for a Smoker?

Depending where you are situated, for Lahore, the best place to train for a smoker or any MMA event is Synergy Fitness.

I have some more questions, who do I contact?

For further information please call 0334-4137706.

Shah “No Pain” Hussain to be fighting September 11th in the UK

Posted on: September 3rd, 2010 by admin No Comments

MMA Pakistan recently caught up with PAK MMA fighter Shah “No Pain” Hussain while training for his upcoming match up in England on the 11th of September. Although Shah was very busy he did have time to give us a few answers to our questions.

1. Your fight is going to be during Ramadan. How has that effected your training?

a) Yes my fight is not just going to be in ramadhan, but in the UK may fall on Eid day itself!! I kind of misjudged the timing of Ramadhan this year round and normally refrain from any kind of competition around this time of the year. But with the fight being on Sept 11th I have had to observe ramadhan on a part time basis. So training hasnt really been affected at all really.

2. Do you know who your opponent is? Anything you can tell us about him?

a) Yes my opponent is a guy called Ben Abbot who is fighting out of Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. I believe he has a stand up background in Muay Thai, thats all I know to be honest.

3. Have you made any changes to your training regimen for this upcoming bout?

a) I have seriously been working on my ground game, my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu both with Gi and without. Ive been training my no Gi BJJ with Przemyslaw Mysiala who is no1 ranked Light Heavy Weight in the UK at the moment at London Shootfighters and Im really enjoying the grappling element of MMA at the moment. Im even considering competing in some BJJ bouts in the near future!
Other than that Ive still been keeping up with my strength and conditioning, cardio and sparring with my team mates Denniston ‘mad max’ Sutherland and my coach David Lee. As its MMA and everything has to be worked on Im afraid!!

4. You will be donating 100% of your fight purse to the Pakistani flood victims, what motivated you to make such a sacrifice?

a) I decided to donate all my fight purse, ticket commission, sponsership money etc to the flood victims of Pakistan as firstly being Pakistani I felt a need to naturally do something, and it just broke my heart seeing pictures and videos on the News every day of the devastation caused by the monsoon, the death toll and on top of that it is the month of Ramadhan and for people going through all the suffering. Its just horrible to think that the world isnt doing enough for these people in desperate need at this moment in time. My prayers and thoughts go to all those affected and involved. God is great and I hope he shows mercy upon those affected. On Sept 11th I shall be fighting for all those victims.

5. Will Pakistani fans be able to watch the fight anyway?

Yes Pakistani fans will be able to watch the fight on www.theactivechannel.com under the fighting section it will be broadcasted usually a couple of weeks after the show on Sky digital channel 281 (The active channel) formerly known as LA Muscle TV

I am also fighting on the 25th of September on a big show called BAMMA 4 which will highlight Alex Reid Vs Tom Watson.
Im fighting on the undercard slot and against a guy called Tom Breese who is making his Pro debut after a successful 8-0-0 at semi pro, so hard work will continue after Kayo MMA on the 11th, no rest for me!!

BAMMA 4 will be shown a week after the show on Bravo channel on sky digital and hopefully they may show the fight.

Other than that, I’ll probably do a training camp out in the USA or in Thailand end of year / early next year and to just keep training and improving.

I also want to give my congratulations to PAK MMA and Shaheen MMA Academy for getting a good spread in last months Fighters Only magazine (I have my copy) and was so pleased to see the article on the rise of MMA in Pakistan and with the mention of future stars. This definately has made an impression on people over here in the UK as a few people had mentioned it to me and were surprised that MMA was actually taking off in Pakistan.

MMA in Pakistan may be a new entity, but I dont think, I KNOW that a Pakistani will be up there and amongst the very best in the world in the future. Just keep training folks and spread the word….

The problem with Martial Arts in Pakistan

Posted on: April 4th, 2010 by admin No Comments

As MMA is growing in popularity all over the world it is also picking up here in Pakistan. More and more people have started watching UFC fights and now want to train to be able to fight like that. Academies and federations are being formed in order to further this sport. However there are some problems which are holding MMA and martial arts back in Pakistan. There is too much politics and many people are just getting into MMA for their own motives.
The main problem is that everyone is trying to get the power themselves. Instead of having a united front or federation which would cover all the fighters and further the cause of MMA in Pakistan everyone is instead opting to create their own federation. This is a big problem because MMA is not very popular in Pakistan yet. However if there was one big federation it will have enough power to actually matter and hold MMA events that would attract fighters and the audience. But due to their being many small organizations none of these have any power and are unable to do anything which matters.
Another problem is the people who are taking advantage of the rise of martial arts in Pakistan. These people know that since this field is becoming more relevant there are going to be more events. These people waste the government money by going on international tours. All they are good for is for having their pictures taken with officials from other countries. Their motive is not to increase the exposure of MMA in Pakistan but to just get to fly around the world and be guests at the expense of martial arts. People need to stop relying on government handouts and instead do something for themselves. This is not a problem; MMA is a very profitable sport and can attract large audiences. It does not require any help from the government. It just needs some serious fighters and good marketing to gain a foothold in Pakistan.
There are also some people who claim to know about MMA because they have certifications from many places. MMA is not about certifications, it is about knowing how to defend oneself and how to fight properly. These people never get into a ring and prove their skills; they just claim to know things due to their certifications. Infact there are even some people who claim to have PHDs in martial arts. Which university did they get the PHD from? People need to wise up. We cannot trust such people who claim to have lots of certifications. People need to ask questions. Ask your instructor about how much they know and where they learnt to fight MMA style. You should not be afraid to ask questions, if you are training under someone you need to make sure that they themselves know what they are supposed to teach you. See how the instructors fight and make sure they have some experience in order to avoid getting burned by a scammer or an inexperienced teacher.

If you are interested in learning MMA and want to at least want to know that your instructor is knowledgeable about MMA, we suggest you do some research before hand and test your instructor and see if he knows what he is talking about. We have attached some links here for you to check out and get some knowledge.

How the Sport of Mixed Martial Arts Has Evolved

Posted on: November 25th, 2009 by admin No Comments

Although mixed martial arts has existed before the launch of the first Ultimate Fighting Championship card in 1993, many regard the UFC 1 as the start of what is now commonly known as MMA. The idea behind the competition was simple, which fighting style is the most effective. There were no weight classes, no time limits, and no rules ( with the exception of poking your opponents eye and biting ). Fights would end in either knockout, technical knockout ( referee stoppage ), submission, or the towel being thrown in.

Over the course of time, the most dominant fighting styles seen in the early days of the UFC begun to merge one another. Styles such as, Muay Thai Boxing, Kickboxing, Boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, emerged as the strongest fighting styles. Fighters begun cross training between different styles in order to prepare themselves for the many possible scenarios in a mixed martial art fight. Muay thai was commonly used for the clinch, Boxing and Kickboxing for stand up, Wrestling for taking the opponent down, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for ground fighting and submissions.

In the present time, it would be foolish to enter an MMA match without having been disciplined at least the slightest bit, in all the aspects of mixed martial arts. Fighters would no longer ‘Stand and Bang’ but would rather plan strategically against their opponent. If their opponent were better than them in stand up, they would take the fight to the ground by wrestling for a takedown. If their opponent has better ground game than them, they would aim to keep the fighting standing at all costs. The rules have changed a lot since 1993 as well. There were now weight classes, time limits, and much more strict rules. Kicking a downed opponent, groin shots, head stomps, hits to the back of the head, are examples one of the many new modifications of the old rules. Moreover, fighters would now have to be licensed, drug tested, undergo medical checkup, before they can fight.

In conclusion, the sport of Mixed Martial Arts has faced a lot of changes since its emergence in 1993. Once known as the most violent and barbaric sport in existence, has slowly emerged as an acceptable sport to the masses. The sport of mixed martial arts is slowly become one of the most popular sports of our time.

How to Get the Best Mixed Martial Arts Equipment For Beginners

Posted on: November 25th, 2009 by admin No Comments

When selecting MMA equipment it is always recommended to research the brands that are available for that MMA equipment before you buy. This is true whether the MMA equipment you are buying is boxing gloves, MMA sparring gloves, MMA boardshorts, kick shields, rash guards and so on. The fightwear brands you may be most familiar with from other sports – and this is especially true if you are new to the sport – may not offer the best MMA equipment for you to buy.

General sports brands such a Fairtex, Addidas and Twins offer a good range of mixed martial arts equipment and fightwear which is of a high standard and quality. However specialist brands for MMA include Tapout who you may have seen advertised on the UFC. MMA fighters often wear MMA boardshorts and MMA clothing advertising this brand.

Granite and Affliction are also excellent manufacturers of MMA equipment and fight clothing, if not yet as high profile It should be possible for you to find all the different types of mixed martial arts equipment and fightwear on one website, for example, specialist stores.

If you are just starting out in the sport of MMA, maybe you got your interest peeked by watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), or have just starting taking lessons and have already decided to start purchasing your mixed martial arts equipment. You have probably decided to start buying your MMA clothing and MMA equipment with either a pair of boxing gloves or a pair of MMA sparring gloves.

When you start out in a sport like mixed martial arts it is important to purchase a gumguard, although you are probably more interested in buying your MMA sparring gloves or boxing gloves. Once you have bought this you can then examine the many different suppliers of MMA gloves and boxing gloves such as Fairtex, Twins and Granite.

Most good mixed martial arts instructors will have already advised you that the most important article of mixed martial arts equipment is your gumguard. Your boxing gloves, your MMA sparring gloves, your kneepads, your thai pads and your groinguard although useful are nowhere near as important an article of mixed martial arts equipment as this. If your instructor has not advised you of this you may want to consider how safety conscious your club really is.

Granite make good quality MMA gloves so this would be a good range of MMA fightwear for you to consider. These MMA gloves are 4oz as is standard and are made of black leather.

Alternatively, if you fancy buying from a brand featured on the Ultimate Fighting Championship you could try Tapout MMA gloves.

You will often see these on the hands of UFC fighters because they have a sponsorship deal with the UFC. Although this is good marketing and some people prefer to wear endorsed fightwear, these articles of mixed martial arts equipment are of just as good quality when bought from brands such as Granite and Affliction as when bought from the Tapout brand.
